I love the new 2017 youth theme taken from James 1:5-6. What a fabulous focus for the year! The sooner our youth learn that they can petition the Lord for strength the better. In October 2016 Sister Carole McConkie's talk was titled "Our Soul's Sincere Desire" it was a beautiful talk that I felt truly magnified the power of prayer. I chose to add a quote from her timely talk at the bottom of the poster. It mentions 5 of the answers we can receive to sincere, heartfelt prayer. Healing, protection, knowledge, forgiveness and peace. I think giving these specific examples to our youth will give them a clearer picture of the fruits of prayer. I have attached downloadable files below in multiple sizes, arranged largest to smallest. Feel free to use them if you'd like!
Like I do each year I prepared an additional poster with keywords from the scripture defined for clearer meaning. I think spending time on these words and truly studying what this scripture means can have a greater influence on our youth. They will most likely read and recite this scripture numerous time this year and throughout their lives. If they have disected it's meaning I think it will be a powerful tool in their arsenal against Satan. I have attached downloadable files below in multiple sizes, arranged largest to smallest. Feel free to use them if you'd like!
YW September lesson #3
This Power Point Covers:
"Why Do We Fast?"
I love this lesson because "Why" we fast may not be something we think about very often. It can become commonplace to observe fast Sunday and go about our business. This lesson pointed out "Why" as well as the blessings available to all of us when we fast with a purpose.
I used the talk "Blessings of a Proper Fast" by Carl Pratt from the lesson outline. I also used "True to the Faith" as content for the slides. I found a story in the September 2008 New Era called "Not So Fast." I loved this story. I included it because I thought it was a great "real world" example that the youth may have experienced themselves.
The quote on the handout comes from the above story. I think its simple yet powerful!
Have a great lesson,
May Lesson #3
This power point covers:
"How can I make my prayers more meaningful?"
Another lesson that is important for all of us! I loved reading the talks and watching videos while preparing this lesson. I used "True to the Faith" as a resource. I also used this talk by Elder D. Todd Christofferson and the 2 talks in the outline by Elder Bednar.
The movie suggestion is great! It is "Daily Bread" also by Elder D. Todd Christofferson. I found another video that I loved. It is President Monson talking about prayer. You can watch it here . Either video would definitely bring the spirit.
For the handout I used the opening paragraph from the lesson outline. I thought it summed up the main message of the lesson very well.
Have a great lesson!
May Lesson #1
This Power Point Covers:
"How do I receive personal revelation?"
This lesson was such a great reminder for me. Sometimes I forget that simply praying when I have a question isn't enough. When I am searching for an answer it's important to slow down, put forth effort, search and listen. The vast majority of the slides comes from "True to the Faith" under Revelation. I loved the list of things we can do in order to invite revelation into our lives. (I used this for the handout) I am excited to teach this to the girls. I am also excited to teach them how to recognize the whisperings of the spirit.
I love the talk and videos by Elder Bednar entitled "Patterns of Light" I planned on showing the video until I watched the second option "Hearing His Voice" Unfortunately, I know I won't have time for both so I chose the 2nd because I liked hearing from the youth and the challenge they present for the viewers. Either are fabulous! Watch them and pick which works best for
Slide 16 I plan on asking the girls this question and having them list answers before we proceed.
For whatever reason I decided not to include a lot of images/pictures on the slides. There was a lot of info I wanted to include and it started getting "cluttered." So , the slides are simple but the message is profound!
Have a great lesson! Jen
P.S. Sorry for being so slow this month! We had stake conference last week so I took my time. :)
March Lesson #3
This Power Point Covers:
How can repentance help me everyday?
In addition to the outline above this lesson also touches on "What is Grace." I felt like it was a necessary thing to explain when talking about repentance.
My goal with this lesson is to take away some of the fear that sometimes accompanies the thought of repentance. I want the girls to know that repentance is not just a one-time even but something we should use in our daily life! We all make mistakes, even that is part of the plan. Repentance is something that takes work but results in true joy. The relief we feel when we have truly repented and committed ourselves to change brings such a peace to our lives. That leads me to the object lesson...
www.Mormonshare.com has a ton of great object lessons! The one I chose is fairly simple. It talks about having 2 bags/totes with something heavy inside (think dumbbell, bag of sugar, canned food etc.) at one point during the lesson (I chose to do this on slide 23) you ask two girls to come up and put the heavy bag on their shoulder. You then continue on with the lesson. On slide 27 I ask the girls to remove the bags and to tell us how they feel. Hopefully removing that extra weight will bring them relief and we can liken that to repentance. When we sincerely repent we free ourselves from the burden of sin.
For a handout I wanted to touch on the fact that Satan will do his best to keep the girls from repenting. He will either whisper lies to them or distract them or some other tactic to keep them from seeking the Savior's help, thus "chipping away" at them. Our Savior allows us the opportunity to make a U-TURN. We can turn back towards the Lord and correct our course. If you want to give something along with the handout you can play off the "CHIP" in the quote. A small snack-size bag of chips is inexpensive or anything with chocolate chips would work too!
Thank you to all of you for checking back and using the ideas on this site. It makes my heart happy! ;)
January: The Godhead Outline
This Power Point covers:
How can I know my Heavenly Father?
Why is Jesus Christ important to me?
Our YW President asked us to combine these two lessons. They actually went together very well. I referenced the talk by Elder Hales entitled "Seeking to Know God, Our Heavenly Father, and His Son, Jesus Christ" and that is the basis for the Power Point.
I used this object lesson from Mormon Share. It suggests using pictures of light that we see every day and likening it to the Savior. This is why I like Power points. Instead of printing out pictures I can simply download them into the PP. It saves time and lots of ink!
I also found an article called "I Believe in Christ" from the March 2008 New Era. I have uploaded a copy at the top of this post. It includes numerous short testimonies of Christ from LDS youth. I thought it might help the girls to hear from youth their age. Choose a few and let the girls read them out loud to the class.
The video "Reclaimed" is wonderful! I hope you all have time to show it during your lesson. I think it gives the girls a very practical look at the power of the atonement. None of us should try to dig up our "old garbage" that the Savior has reclaimed. If you haven't watched it, I highly recommend it.
The image for the handout is fairly simple. I don't want leaders to feel like they have to bake treats or go out and buy something for every lesson. If you can, great, go ahead and attach this image to something fun! The dollar store or party aisle of WalMart/Target has tons of "seek" items...small magnifying glasses, little binoculars, cheap little sunglasses etc. If you want to attach it to candy, great! If you just want to print them and hand them out, that works too!
Have a great lesson!
November: "Spiritual and Temporal Self Reliance" Outline
This Power Point Covers:
"What is the Lord's way for providing for the poor & needy?"
"How can I find solutions to my challenges and problems?"
This is another lesson I loved preparing! I truly feel the "Come Follow Me" curriculum is so inspired and provides a great environment for learning. I hope these Power Points help you as a leader provide opportunities for the girls to share their thoughts. Towards the end of this lesson I included an opportunity for the girls to split into small groups to search through a New Era or Ensign for answers to problems facing youth. I hope each girl will feel comfortable sharing her ideas. Feel free to adjust for your individual classes. For a handout, I planned on printing the "Scriptural Directory Assistance" This was produced in 2006 my Tressa Edmunds. I have retyped it because my original copy was a bit blurry. ;) My hope is that the girls come away from this lesson understanding their role in the Welfare of others and the importance in serving like Christ. I also hope they will realize how much they are loved NO MATTER WHAT! That the Lord is always there to help them. No one should feel like they are weathering the storms of this life alone, especially these beautiful Young Women. I want them to try to pray, read the scriptures, and to study the words of the prophets during their times of trial. Good luck with your lessons! ;)
**Please Note: Due to different versions of power point the slides may need to be adjusted after you download them. Please go through the power point before your lesson to make sure the pictures and the text are formatted correctly! I just opened a file I made using my laptop with my iPad and the font was different, colors were different and some of the pictures were in the wrong place. It may take a little tweeking! :)**
I'm a 36 year old Mom of 4 kiddos, 3 boys (12, 4 & 2 years old) and one little princess (9). I have an awesome hubby who puts up with my craziness...He supports me when I spend way too much time on my YW lessons. I started this blog for fun and have been so excited to watch it grow and watch others being able to use the Power Point lessons, handouts and other ideas I have posted. Thank you for stopping by!
