YW March Lesson #5
This Power point Covers:
"What Is The Resurrection?"
This lesson will be taught to our young women the last Sunday of March. However, I feel like this will be our Easter lesson. The outlines for April are on different topics. I loved preparing this lesson and I'm glad it's a few weeks before Easter so that I can truly prepare myself, my family and the YW for a Christ-centered Easter.
The resurrection is a topic I was very familiar with but I did not truly have a testimony of it until I lost my Father very suddenly 11 years ago. His death was an opportunity for me to study the resurrection and what a gift it truly is. A belief that we will be reunited with our loved ones makes the sting of death much easier to bear. Another facet of the resurrection that we may not think about is that the resurrection gives meaning to our lives. If we know we will live again after this mortal life we will try harder to accomplish important things while we are here. The resurrection gives us hope, meaning, and comfort.
The video I chose to show is a "Mormon Message" entitled "Sunday Will Come" I have added a link to the download above because it is not available to download from mormonchannel.org.
I also touched on the topic of having a focus on the Savior during the Easter holiday. I don't want to step on anyone's toes, all familie's traditions are different. I made mention of it because it was in the outline from lds.org and I think its a good reminder for all of us to keep our mind centered on the true reason for celebration.
The handout is very simple. I wanted it to be light, bright, and incorporate springtime. The message is also simple but profound. HE IS RISEN!
Have a wonderful lesson
YW March Lesson #4
This Power Point Covers:
Why Do I Need To Forgive Others?
I love this topic! It's a tough one! It's not always easy to forgive but this outline reminds us that if we want to be forgiven ourselves, we need to extend forgiveness to others. The story of the woman who was to be stoned for her sins is always a powerful one. I love the reminder that we should not cast stones unless we are sinless. Slides 5-8 list a scripture with questions to go along with it. You can either hand out the scriptures in advance and ask the girl who had the scripture to explain or read them together as a class. Slide 9 is the object lesson from lds.org. You let 1 girl or all the girls make a paper airplane. After they have thrown it once across the room, you tape a penny to one side. They try to throw it again and see that the penny weighs it down and makes it hard to fly. This is likened to holding a grudge. Once we let go of the grudge (remove the penny) we are able to fly again without the burden of anger/animosity.
Slides 13, 14, 15 list 3 stories from the scriptures. Each story is an example of forgiveness. There are also questions to go along with each story. My plan is to divide the girls into 3 groups and have them read the scriptures as a group and then have each of them share something they read with the class. The group can answer the questions or you can answer as a class.
Slide 27 lists 5 short scenarios where the girls can decide if the choice was judgmental or forgiving...these are pretty easy answers so I plan to have the girls restate the judgmental answers in a more forgiving way.
Slide 32 is a short self test from President Uchtdorf's talk in the outline. It is a good reminder to all of us! I will obviously have the girls answer in their minds not out loud. :)
The handout is simple but I feel the message is profound...let us be kind, put down our accusing stones and forgive. Let the love of God fill our hearts and wipe away our grudges, anger and hurt. If I add anything to it it will be "Sweetheart" candies or something similar. :)
I wanted to point out that ALL the information I include in my power points can be found on www.lds.org. The talks I used for this lesson include both from the lesson outline (President Hinckley's talk as well as President Uchtdorfs. I also used a lot of info front lesson #34 in the "Preparing for Exaltation Manual also available at lds.org)
Have a great lesson...
March Lesson #3
This Power Point Covers:
How can repentance help me everyday?
In addition to the outline above this lesson also touches on "What is Grace." I felt like it was a necessary thing to explain when talking about repentance.
My goal with this lesson is to take away some of the fear that sometimes accompanies the thought of repentance. I want the girls to know that repentance is not just a one-time even but something we should use in our daily life! We all make mistakes, even that is part of the plan. Repentance is something that takes work but results in true joy. The relief we feel when we have truly repented and committed ourselves to change brings such a peace to our lives. That leads me to the object lesson...
www.Mormonshare.com has a ton of great object lessons! The one I chose is fairly simple. It talks about having 2 bags/totes with something heavy inside (think dumbbell, bag of sugar, canned food etc.) at one point during the lesson (I chose to do this on slide 23) you ask two girls to come up and put the heavy bag on their shoulder. You then continue on with the lesson. On slide 27 I ask the girls to remove the bags and to tell us how they feel. Hopefully removing that extra weight will bring them relief and we can liken that to repentance. When we sincerely repent we free ourselves from the burden of sin.
For a handout I wanted to touch on the fact that Satan will do his best to keep the girls from repenting. He will either whisper lies to them or distract them or some other tactic to keep them from seeking the Savior's help, thus "chipping away" at them. Our Savior allows us the opportunity to make a U-TURN. We can turn back towards the Lord and correct our course. If you want to give something along with the handout you can play off the "CHIP" in the quote. A small snack-size bag of chips is inexpensive or anything with chocolate chips would work too!
Thank you to all of you for checking back and using the ideas on this site. It makes my heart happy! ;)
March Lesson Help #1
This Power Point Covers:
"What is The Atonement of Jesus Christ?"
As we approach the Easter season it is nice to refocus on the Savior and His Atonement. I am excited for the March Lesson outlines because I feel like they are a wonderful prerequisite to Easter. These lessons also fall in line with our 2014 theme of "Come Unto Christ."
Slides 3, 5 and 7 are large pictures of Gethsemane, the Crucifixion, and the Resurrection. I know most of the girls have heard about these scenes and I wanted to give them an opportunity to share what they know about each event before we proceeded with the lesson. The girls usually listen well to each other and can teach each other more than they know!
The video: "Not A One Time Thing" is a wonderful reminder that the Atonement is not just for "the big stuff" but the daily mistakes we all make. We need to rely on the Savior's Atonement every day of our lives. It also shows the youth that meeting with the Bishop doesn't have to be a scary thing. Bishops are called to help us and be there for us as we work through the challenges of life.
I found the quote for the handout on LDS.org. I know chalkboard posters are popular right now and the analogy of the eraser is a strong one when it comes to repentance. I thought it would be cute to attach the handout to a small eraser or a little baggie with a couple of the pencil top erasers...we usually see an eraser of some kind everyday. Hopefully it will be a constant reminder to the girls that the Atonement is there for them and will wipe their slate clean. It was designed to be printed as a 4X6. If you need another size please let me know.
Have a great lesson.
Have you watched the video of the new 2014 Theme Song? If not, click here I have watched it 3 times and been brought to tears every time! The video and the lyrics of the song are so powerful! It brought such a strong Spirit to the room I knew I wanted to do something so that the YW could remember the video and remember the 2014 theme. The entire song is beautiful but it wouldn't fit on a 5X7 or 8X10. :) Instead I chose to use the chorus. I wanted to emphasize the lines in the song where it says He is calling YOUR name, He is waiting for YOU! I want the girls to feel how personal this invitation is for all of us!
I have made this image in a 5X7 and an 8X10. I thought this would be a wonderful Easter gift or a New Beginnings gift if you haven't already had your New Beginnings. You can print this image at Costco, WalMart or any other photo center. You can purchase inexpensive frames and frame them for your girls. If you are using this as an Easter gift it could be given at the end of your Easter lesson or I have seen some cute LDS Easter Egg Hunt ideas on Pinterest you could use for an activity. The final egg could tell the girls where to go to find their gift and you could have a framed picture for each girl. Just a couple ideas. :) If you need a size other than the 5X7 or 8X10 let me know. :)
January Outline: The Godhead
This Power Point Covers:
What are the roles of the Holy Ghost?
I loved preparing this lesson. I learned a lot! This lesson focuses on the roles and importance of the Holy Ghost. I think it touched on some points that were new to me and things I don't usually think about when I consider the Holy Ghost's impact on my life.
The 3rd member of the Godhead is vital to our spiritual well being! This is the reason I chose the quote for the handout. It is by Elder Adrian Ochoa. I thought a cute handout would be to attach the image to a small plastic bag with little red candy hearts. Because valentines is right around the corner you can find chocolate hearts wrapped in red foil or red gummy hearts, etc. I have attached a JPEG as well as a PDF with 3 images to a page.
For slides 2-5 I copied the quotes and scripture references onto a separate page so that I can cut them out and hand them out to the girls before class starts. If their quote has a scripture reference I am going to ask them to look up the scripture and be prepared to read them to the class along with their quote. I have 16 girls so having them participate keeps them focused! If your group is smaller you can just have the girls take turns reading the slides as you move through the lesson.
Slide 8 is an object lesson/analogy that I got from Mormon Share . The video I chose is called "Increase Your Testimony." I LOVED this video! It made me teary and I think it will definitely bring the Spirit. That's our goal right!
Slide 15 is a quote from LDS author Anthony Sweat.
Have a great lesson! Let me know if you have questions or problems downloading files. If you need the Poer point converted to an older version of Power Point let me know. I have had a couple people contact me with that issue and I can convert it and email it to you. :)
January: The Godhead Outline
This Power Point covers:
How can I know my Heavenly Father?
Why is Jesus Christ important to me?
Our YW President asked us to combine these two lessons. They actually went together very well. I referenced the talk by Elder Hales entitled "Seeking to Know God, Our Heavenly Father, and His Son, Jesus Christ" and that is the basis for the Power Point.
I used this object lesson from Mormon Share. It suggests using pictures of light that we see every day and likening it to the Savior. This is why I like Power points. Instead of printing out pictures I can simply download them into the PP. It saves time and lots of ink!
I also found an article called "I Believe in Christ" from the March 2008 New Era. I have uploaded a copy at the top of this post. It includes numerous short testimonies of Christ from LDS youth. I thought it might help the girls to hear from youth their age. Choose a few and let the girls read them out loud to the class.
The video "Reclaimed" is wonderful! I hope you all have time to show it during your lesson. I think it gives the girls a very practical look at the power of the atonement. None of us should try to dig up our "old garbage" that the Savior has reclaimed. If you haven't watched it, I highly recommend it.
The image for the handout is fairly simple. I don't want leaders to feel like they have to bake treats or go out and buy something for every lesson. If you can, great, go ahead and attach this image to something fun! The dollar store or party aisle of WalMart/Target has tons of "seek" items...small magnifying glasses, little binoculars, cheap little sunglasses etc. If you want to attach it to candy, great! If you just want to print them and hand them out, that works too!
Have a great lesson!
The word gospel means “good news.” The good news is that Jesus Christ has made a perfect atonement for mankind that will redeem all mankind from the grave and reward each individual according to his or her works. (Bible Dictionary)
Because the LDS Church uses its members to teach, we all experience the responsibility to share gospel truths with others. As a teacher of youth, I personally feel a great desire to employ what I like to call the "Good News Principle" in my lessons. "The Good News Principle" is just what the Bible Dictionary says...it's sharing the Atonement of Jesus Christ and reminding others that His great sacrifice redeems all of us from our imperfections.
What I mean by this is I want the girls I teach to leave each Sunday with hope. I want them to feel uplifted and hopeful for their futures. Like President Monson's quote above, I want to brighten, touch and help save their souls.
We do not know exactly what each of our girls are going through in their individual lives. Each person is different, each family is different, and I try to remember this as I teach. If I am teaching a lesson on Eternal Families and one of the class members has divorced parents, this topic can be confusing and painful. If the lesson covers chastity and one of the youth is currently struggling with this I want to make sure to remind her of the saving principle of the Atonement. I never want a girl to leave my class feeling like "all is lost." Because we can't always tell who might be struggling or why, I feel its important to mention the Atonement often and to bear personal testimony of it.
A contrite heart that leads us to repent is wonderful! I feel like this comes from the Spirit. A feeling of discouragement, depression and fear comes from Satan. I want to try to remind myself and the girls that repentance is an ongoing, never ending process. How truly thankful I am for a loving older brother who would give his life so that I can be forgiven.
Below is one of my favorite Greg Olsen paintings. It is entitled "Forgiven." Below the picture I have included the wording from the back of the print written so beautifully by the Author Greg Olsen.
The prophet Isaiah gave hope and comfort to all who have stumbled and made mistakes when he revealed these words from the Lord: “…Though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.” (Isaiah 1:18)
With a broken heart and a contrite spirit, we can receive forgiveness and learn from our mistakes. Part of what we may learn in the process is that happiness comes not only from receiving forgiveness, but also from extending it!

**Please Note: Due to different versions of power point the slides may need to be adjusted after you download them. Please go through the power point before your lesson to make sure the pictures and the text are formatted correctly! I just opened a file I made using my laptop with my iPad and the font was different, colors were different and some of the pictures were in the wrong place. It may take a little tweeking! :)**
I'm a 36 year old Mom of 4 kiddos, 3 boys (12, 4 & 2 years old) and one little princess (9). I have an awesome hubby who puts up with my craziness...He supports me when I spend way too much time on my YW lessons. I started this blog for fun and have been so excited to watch it grow and watch others being able to use the Power Point lessons, handouts and other ideas I have posted. Thank you for stopping by!
