January: The Godhead Outline
This Power Point Covers:
"What do we know about the nature of the Godhead?"
The Godhead is one of those topics that I feel is SUPER important for the girls to understand. The Godhead is one of the reasons our Church is different from many Christian churches today. Understanding "Why" and being able to explain that to someone not of our faith is invaluable. In addition to the articles found in the lesson outline on lds.org I also used the following:
Learning About The Godhead New Era January 2013
Rejoice in Our Knowledge of the Godhead Liahona Feb 2005
The second article is where I came up with the handout idea. I have attached a JPEG with just one of the titles or a PDF with 3 to a page. My plan is to print them on cardstock and attach a snack size "Almond Joy" to each one.
Why would we rejoice? What I hope these girls take away from this lesson is that our knowledge of the Godhead makes it easier to develop a relationship with each of the members of the Godhead. Knowing we are Daughters of a Heavenly Father who loves us and created us in his image is reason to rejoice! Knowing that the Savior is literally our older brother and our mediator with Heavenly Father can provide us with a sense of comfort, hope, and a reason to rejoice! Knowing that the Holy Ghost is our constant companion and will testify of truth to us, helping us to discern right from wrong, is reason to rejoice!
Our knowledge that these three beings are separate and accessible to us can provide an opportunity to grow closer to each member of the Godhead. Each relationship is individual and important and has a purpose on our road back to our Heavenly Father's presence.
Slide #14 gives a chance for the girls to "role play." The role play includes answering questions about the Godhead from friends who aren't of our faith. HERE are some questions and possible answers you can use. Depending on the size of your class you could split the girls into small groups or have individuals answer.
**On a side note...Thank you for so many kind comments and emails. I feel so honored and humbled that these power points and handouts are helpful to other YW Leaders.
I wanted to come up with an actual INVITATION that could be used in the introduction of the 2014 theme or in New Beginnings. I used this article from the YW General Presidency entitled "You Are Invited." If you haven't read it, it's a wonderful resource and a quick read! I also put together this short, 8 slide Power Point (download is also above) that visually breaks down this same article from the YW General Presidency. I hope this helps you as you prepare for New Beginnings and the 2014 theme introduction. The JPEG is a much clearer image but if you can't open it here is a PDF of the invitation.
**For those who have requested a Spanish version of the Power Point...Thank you to Nancy for translating! I have attached the Spanish version below! :)
There are so many invitations in the scriptures to "Come Unto Christ" I have made a list of 10 that you can look over. I feel like the more we can use the scriptures when teaching and explaining concepts the more the youth will turn to the scriptures for answers. These scriptures (and many others) can be used to introduce the 2014 theme, for New Beginnings, or during our lessons or activities. You can either present the scriptures to the youth, or give the girls a list, split them into groups, and let them look the scriptures up and share them with the rest of the girls. I want the girls to know how much the Savior loves them and longs for them to Come to Him. Let me know if you have other ideas for incorporating the scriptures!
It's not too late! You can still pull off a cute and easy gift for neighbors, school teachers,
church teachers, coaches, etc...
I have two easy peasy options for you!!!
*I recommend printing on cardstock but good ol' paper works too :)
Attach this tag to a roll of Christmas wrapping paper and you are good to go! If you are looking for a discount, try buying your wrapping paper at the local dollar store!
We printed these out, and tied them to bottles of Sparkling Cider. You could use any drink! Hot Chocolate, Sprite, Root Beer, whatever you consider a "cup of cheer!"
Have a Very Merry Christmas!!!
I have been wanting to do a Christ centered "12 Days of Christmas" activity with my family and with my Young Women. What a perfect time to draw our hearts and minds to the Savior! Not only because it's Christmas but in preparation for the new year and the new Youth theme "Come Unto Christ.
Because today is the 13th I knew I had to get on the ball! I found a lesson called "Drawing Near Unto Christ" (YW Manual 2 Lesson 1) I used that for the basis of this activity. I have also added a few things.
The attached PDF (and Word doc) has a page for each 12 days prior to Christmas. You can start on the 13th of December and finish on Christmas Eve or you can start on the 14th and finish Christmas Day.
The first page explains the activity:
12 Days Closer to Christ
It’s 12 days until Christmas! Each day until then you will receive an envelope from us with a new thought, scripture, challenge & small treat. Once you have completed the challenge you can eat the treat!
We know things about Christ, but do we actually KNOW him?
John 17:3 “And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.”
For the next 12 days we will focus on qualities of the Savior and experiences He had so that we can truly know him better.
Jesus Christ loves each of us. He gave his life for us, atoned for our sins, and desires that we each Come unto Him.
D&C 88:63: “Draw near unto me and I will draw near unto you; seek me diligently and ye shall find me; ask, and ye shall receive; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.”
We hope for the next 12 days, together, we can Seek and Find, Ask and Receive, Knock and have answers opened unto us. Your challenge is to take part in this activity by reading the scriptures and doing your best to complete the challenges.
As your YW leaders we want you to know how much we love you. We also know how much the Savior and Heavenly Father love you.
This activity could work for your family, youth, visiting teaching sisters, neighbors etc. I have attached the file in both PDF and Word. I attached the Word document so you could make any necessary changes based on who you decided to use the activity for.
I kept it SUPER SIMPLE! All we need at this time of year is more stress right?!? :) The treats should just be something small...a snack size chocolate bar, a laffy taffy, etc. Just a little reward for completing the challenge. I plan on printing out a page for each girl, signing it, putting the letter and a small candy inside an envelope and dropping it off at their homes each day. It will take some time, but I think it will be SO worth it!
If the girls complete this activity I believe they will realize that the Atonement means so much! They can find forgiveness, comfort, understanding, joy and so much more in their relationship with Jesus Christ.
Merry Christmas! I hope you have a wonderful holiday.
December: "Building The Kingdom of God" Outline
This Power Point covers
"What can I do to help new members of the Church?"
"How can I help my less-active friends return to church?"
There is SO much to love about this lesson! All the resources are amazing...it was tough to narrow it down!
I combined these two topics because, to me, they seemed to fit together so well. One of my favorite talks, "You Are My Hands" by President Uchtdorf was included in the resources for this lesson. If you haven't read it, I highly recommend it! It is a beautiful talk and really sets the tone for this lesson.
On slide 11 it shows a prompt for the "Post It Note" object lesson. You can read about it HERE. It is a fun way to show the girls the power of their words and actions. Obviously you can change the wording to fit your individual class needs.
Slide 14 is a prompt for the video "The Faith of Youth: The Ennis Family" I loved this video! It really gives the girls a real world example of what it means to be "His Hands."
Slide 16 references the Talk/Video "Sugar Beets and The Worth of Souls" I would DEFINITELY recommend watching this video. The Prophet speaks to us as YW Leaders. I thought is was very inspiring and powerful! Watch the video (or read the article) before hand and then simply paraphrase the Sugar Beet story.
Slide 18 references the talk "You are My Hands." Again, I would read the story about the statue of Christ BEFORE and then paraphrase for the girls.
For a handout I had a bunch of ideas...Depending on your class size and budget you could do a couple of different things:
A) I bought Hershey "HUGS" to play off the quote above that says to "Embrace" & "Hold on" to others. You could either put some in a baggie and attach the handout or you could get the clear "food service" gloves (symbolizing "His Hands") and fill one with "HUGS." I couldn't find the gloves so I will just use a small plastic baggie tied with ribbon. :)
B) If I had a smaller group (I have 16) I thought it would be cute to buy the $1 gloves (playing off the "his Hands" idea) and attach the handout.
Have a wonderful lesson!
The word gospel means “good news.” The good news is that Jesus Christ has made a perfect atonement for mankind that will redeem all mankind from the grave and reward each individual according to his or her works. (Bible Dictionary)
Because the LDS Church uses its members to teach, we all experience the responsibility to share gospel truths with others. As a teacher of youth, I personally feel a great desire to employ what I like to call the "Good News Principle" in my lessons. "The Good News Principle" is just what the Bible Dictionary says...it's sharing the Atonement of Jesus Christ and reminding others that His great sacrifice redeems all of us from our imperfections.
What I mean by this is I want the girls I teach to leave each Sunday with hope. I want them to feel uplifted and hopeful for their futures. Like President Monson's quote above, I want to brighten, touch and help save their souls.
We do not know exactly what each of our girls are going through in their individual lives. Each person is different, each family is different, and I try to remember this as I teach. If I am teaching a lesson on Eternal Families and one of the class members has divorced parents, this topic can be confusing and painful. If the lesson covers chastity and one of the youth is currently struggling with this I want to make sure to remind her of the saving principle of the Atonement. I never want a girl to leave my class feeling like "all is lost." Because we can't always tell who might be struggling or why, I feel its important to mention the Atonement often and to bear personal testimony of it.
A contrite heart that leads us to repent is wonderful! I feel like this comes from the Spirit. A feeling of discouragement, depression and fear comes from Satan. I want to try to remind myself and the girls that repentance is an ongoing, never ending process. How truly thankful I am for a loving older brother who would give his life so that I can be forgiven.
Below is one of my favorite Greg Olsen paintings. It is entitled "Forgiven." Below the picture I have included the wording from the back of the print written so beautifully by the Author Greg Olsen.
The prophet Isaiah gave hope and comfort to all who have stumbled and made mistakes when he revealed these words from the Lord: “…Though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.” (Isaiah 1:18)
With a broken heart and a contrite spirit, we can receive forgiveness and learn from our mistakes. Part of what we may learn in the process is that happiness comes not only from receiving forgiveness, but also from extending it!
Greg Olsen - 2004
I LOVE this quote from Sister Marriott! It came from the "Church News" on November 12, 2013. You can read it HERE . I love the image of a "Call To Arms." It is a true battle our youth are involved in! This is a battle for their ETERNAL lives. Sister Marriott reminds us that because we are surrounded by ungodliness, we need to be prepared to DENY IT! As a Youth leader I feel a great responsibility to help "arm" these young women with the spiritual strength they need to walk away from sin and towards Christ. I wanted to make an image I could add to one of my Power Points. I have also attached a PDF for those who can't open the JPEG file. You can download them below:
December: "Building The Kingdom of God" Outline
This Power Point Covers:
"How Can I Prepare to Establish a Christ-Centered Home?"
This Power Point only covers 1 topic but it's a topic we could go on and on about! I tried to keep it concise but there are a lot of slides with a lot of info. I have found the power points are a great tool to keep the girls focused. It works even better when I let the girls do the reading! If the slide has a lot to read I just go around the room and let each girl read a section or bullet point. This seems to keep them on their toes and listening!
I also utilized a couple of the awesome object lessons found on "Mormon Share." I have indicated on the power point slides at which point to do the object lesson. The first uses toothpicks...Have a girl come up and try to break one toothpick. She will be able to do it easily. This one toothpick represents us when we are on our own...however if we have a family we add more strength to the bundle. Add more toothpicks representing family members, and another representing Christ (we want to keep his influence in our homes) once the bundle is bigger wind an elastic around it to keep them together. Now have the girl try to break them. She won't be able to because the bigger bunch is much stronger...signifies that a strong family who sticks together (and with Christ) is much stronger than if we are on our own. A family sticks together and supports each other. :)
The second object lesson would work throughout the section of slides covering the scripture in D&C 88:119 that mentions a house of prayer, fasting, faith etc....Read the instructions here. In our YW group we have about 14 girls. I thought after each slide (prayer, fasting, faith, learning, glory, order, God) I would have two girls come up and each could place a block. You could adjust this for your YW group based on size. Once we have completed the house I would uncover my blocks and point out that without being able to see an example it is impossible for the girls to match my structure exactly. Christ is our perfect example and luckily he has given us clear guidelines of how to build a Christ Centered home where his Spirit can dwell.
I have added a place to show the video "Motherhood: An Eternal Partnership with God"
Lastly, for a handout I came up with a this little image (found at the top of this post) that reminds the girls to make a "commit-MINT" now to build a Christ Centered home. You can print this out and attach it to any type of mint. York, Andes, Starlight mint etc. Here is a PDF with 6 images to a page.
I hope this helps. :)
(Every few posts I like to restate that fonts and formatting can vary based on the version of Power Point you have..." I try to keep the fonts simple so you can adjust them as needed :)
**Please Note: Due to different versions of power point the slides may need to be adjusted after you download them. Please go through the power point before your lesson to make sure the pictures and the text are formatted correctly! I just opened a file I made using my laptop with my iPad and the font was different, colors were different and some of the pictures were in the wrong place. It may take a little tweeking! :)**
I'm a 36 year old Mom of 4 kiddos, 3 boys (12, 4 & 2 years old) and one little princess (9). I have an awesome hubby who puts up with my craziness...He supports me when I spend way too much time on my YW lessons. I started this blog for fun and have been so excited to watch it grow and watch others being able to use the Power Point lessons, handouts and other ideas I have posted. Thank you for stopping by!
