Today is my kids first day of school! It's Back To School frenzy around here!
I've been thinking a lot...I really wanted a way to drive home the idea of keeping Christ with my kids throughout the school day. The school halls can be scary! Our kids have to be prepared for the moral challenges that will certainly come. I decided to come up with a Back To School activity idea that incorporates the 2014 Youth theme "Come Unto Christ."
I started thinking about common questions the kids ask each other at the beginning of a new school year and played off those with answers that center around Christ. I have 3 questions. For each question there is an activity and a spiritual mini-lesson. The details are attached in a PDF (download above) but here is the basic idea:
"Who Is Your Locker Partner?"
Activity: Magnet Picture of Jesus Christ for their lockers
Spiritual Thought: Talk about how keeping a picture of Christ in the YW's lockers can keep their thoughts and actions focused on the Savior and His Teachings. (full mini lesson in PDF above)
This is the easiest craft on the planet! Buy some pass along cards here ($2 for 100!) Buy some magnetic tape at WalMart or an office supply store. Cut two strips for each girl. She can place them on the back of the pass along card and "voila!" She has a magnet for her locker!
"What teachers do you have?" (that question is not grammatically correct but lets go with it :)
Activity: Prayer Rock
Spiritual Thought: Talk about how Jesus Christ is our true teacher and this life is our greatest test. We can use prayer to receive personal revelation from our Savior (full mini lesson in PDF above)
I turned to Pinterest for ideas. Click on the link below to find instructions for these prayer rocks or design your own!
"Mormon Mommy Blogs"
"Will You Eat With Me At Lunch?"
Activity: Scripture Bookmarks
Spiritual Thought: "Feast" on the words of Christ. (full mini lesson in PDF above)
Again...thank you Pinterest :)
Both are easy and super cute. Bring a glue gun and make your life easier. On the second bookmark from Crafty Endeavors I think I would have the girls hand sew the button to the ribbon (that passes off Personal Progress anyway ;) and glue gun the rest. I'm not sure the glued on button would hold!?!?
A Little Crafting Crafty Endeavors
I hope this activity will center your YW on Christ as they start this new school year. :)
Have Fun! Jen
YW August Lesson #3 Why is Chastity Important?
This Power Point Covers:
"Why Is Chastity Important?"
I prepared another lesson from this outline last year. You can find it HERE. Both of the lessons are prepared from the "Come Follow Me" outline. Feel free to use either or both. :)
The focus of this Power Point is being proactive. Teaching the YW what the Church's standards are and how they can avoid making mistakes by making commitments NOW. While this topic can be awkward at times, if we follow the resources the church has provided us, we can't go wrong! The "For the Strength of Youth" pamphlet really spells it out! It leaves no room for misunderstanding. I appreciate the honest approach the Church has taken in regard to leading our youth. The world's standards continue to fall and we have to fortify ourselves against Satan.
I used the FTSOY pamphlet, True to the Faith, as well as all but one of the articles listed in the outline. The 3 video options are awesome! My 2013 lesson utilizes "True Confidence". I LOVE this video. The other two videos are also powerful. You may need to watch all 3 and see which is most appropriate for your girls.
The quote for the handout comes from "True to the Faith." I wanted the girls to really understand the importance of making their decision NOW! When the temptations come the ability to make correct decisions is much more difficult. I love how the quote encourages the girls to make such a FIRM and DEEP commitment that it can NEVER be shaken! This type of deep commitment is more than just a "good idea." The girls souls are at stake!
Have a wonderful lesson,
August Lesson #2
This Power Point Covers:
Why Is Temple Marriage Important?
Another wonderful lesson on the importance of temple marriage and how it affects us eternally.
I found a New Era article from 2013 entitled "Why Temple Marriage?" I loved the language of the article. The author did a great job of talking to the youth on a level they can understand. I mixed information from this article with quotes from Russell M. Nelson's talk called "Celestial Marriage" from the lesson outline.
As I prepare lessons like this I always think about the sensitive topic that it is. Some of the youth may not have families who are sealed. They may have parents who are divorced. I just think its so important to be aware of these things and to make sure the young women leave feeling hopeful, not discouraged.
The handout idea came from a Mormon Ad from 2004 called "Dream Date." Such a great visual for the girls. Hopefully they can make this eternally important goal now!
Have a great lesson!
**Please Note: Due to different versions of power point the slides may need to be adjusted after you download them. Please go through the power point before your lesson to make sure the pictures and the text are formatted correctly! I just opened a file I made using my laptop with my iPad and the font was different, colors were different and some of the pictures were in the wrong place. It may take a little tweeking! :)**
I'm a 36 year old Mom of 4 kiddos, 3 boys (12, 4 & 2 years old) and one little princess (9). I have an awesome hubby who puts up with my craziness...He supports me when I spend way too much time on my YW lessons. I started this blog for fun and have been so excited to watch it grow and watch others being able to use the Power Point lessons, handouts and other ideas I have posted. Thank you for stopping by!
