March VT Message: Jesus Christ is the Light of The World
Jesus has asked that we “hold up [His] light that it may shine unto the world” (3 Nephi 18:24).
What a wonderful challenge for us and the sisters we visit to share the "Light of Christ" with others. I loved the promise by Henry B. Eyring that every time we "try" (he didn't say we had to be perfect) to be more like the Savior our testimonies are strengthened, we will know the Savior is the Light of The World and we will reflect the light of Christ to others. That makes me want to try harder! :)

YW March Lesson #2
This Power Point Covers:
"What Does It Mean To Have Faith In Jesus Christ"
Now this is another lesson that could really take up 2 weeks or more! Trying to narrow down the information always proves to be a challenge! I love the topic of Faith and I hope the girls leave the lesson feeling strong, and excited to move forward in Faith.
I wanted to make sure I touched on the topic of "questions/doubts" I think it is so important for the youth to know that it is very normal for them to have questions. It is what they choose to do with their questions that makes the difference. I believe if they will turn to the Word of God and the Word of our Prophets they will find answers, their testimony will grow, and they will develop faith in the Savior. If they feel discouraged, embarrassed and ashamed because they don't understand something gospel-related that can lead them right into Satan's waiting arms!
The video "Pure & Simple Faith" was so touching. The story of a young woman in the Philippines who had such strong faith for the most basic of needs. It is both humbling and inspiring!
The handout says "Faith is a gift from God but we must nurture our faith to keep it strong." There is a section of slides that describes what it means to nurture our faith and how we can do that. I believe all of us, regardless of our age are always in the process of nurturing our faith and our testimony. I thought if you wanted to give a little something along with the handout, anything related to "nurture" or "grow" would be cute. The stores are full of darling little Easter candies, treats etc. Anything with a little flower on it or a small seed packet or a little clay pot, etc would be cute. The dollar store is always a great resource. Just the handout is great too! Never feel the need to spend money for handouts! :) The handout is formatted to be printed as a 4X6, if you need a different size let me know.
Have a great lesson.
There is a delicious trend going on in our area called "Waffle Love." A Waffle Truck travels around to different areas selling fabulous waffles with amazing toppings (nutella, whip cream, chocolate, strawberries, bananas, etc). They have a huge following and I decided to use a little "Waffle Love" in a YW activity playing off the idiom "Don't Waffle." If you aren't familiar with that idiom to "waffle" means to be indecisive or wishy-washy. I thought about the lesson last month about making righteous choices and the advice Sister Elaine Cannon gave to make those tough decisions now. I thought this was a great base for a fun and important lesson.
The For The Strength of Youth pamphlet outlines 19 areas where the Youth can make righteous decisions. I took those topics and came up with some "scenarios" similar to ones I've used in some lessons in the past. I think the scenarios are helpful because sometimes its easy for us to give the "right" answer to questions in church but when it is actually put into an experience in our everyday life it becomes a bit more "real." There are 21 scenarios. Feel free to download them and use any or all of them or create your own.
How I envisioned this activity is the girls would start by making their waffle creation at the waffle bar and then take a seat to eat their masterpiece. This could be up to a long table, on the floor, seated in chairs in a circle, etc. Then while the girls eat they can participate in a discussion about righteous decisions. The scenarios would be printed out, cut into individual strips and folded. The girls would come forward and pick a strip out of a container. They would read the scenario and then everyone could discuss possible solutions. The hope is that through the group discussion the girls will decided now how they would react in a similar situation. As leaders we would want to finish each scenario with a statement regarding the decision that could be made now. For example...A Scenario on modesty...We could conclude by saying "We need to decide now that we will dress modestly no matter what! Whether its a dance, a party, a vacation etc."

March Lesson Help #1
This Power Point Covers:
"What is The Atonement of Jesus Christ?"
As we approach the Easter season it is nice to refocus on the Savior and His Atonement. I am excited for the March Lesson outlines because I feel like they are a wonderful prerequisite to Easter. These lessons also fall in line with our 2014 theme of "Come Unto Christ."
Slides 3, 5 and 7 are large pictures of Gethsemane, the Crucifixion, and the Resurrection. I know most of the girls have heard about these scenes and I wanted to give them an opportunity to share what they know about each event before we proceeded with the lesson. The girls usually listen well to each other and can teach each other more than they know!
The video: "Not A One Time Thing" is a wonderful reminder that the Atonement is not just for "the big stuff" but the daily mistakes we all make. We need to rely on the Savior's Atonement every day of our lives. It also shows the youth that meeting with the Bishop doesn't have to be a scary thing. Bishops are called to help us and be there for us as we work through the challenges of life.
I found the quote for the handout on LDS.org. I know chalkboard posters are popular right now and the analogy of the eraser is a strong one when it comes to repentance. I thought it would be cute to attach the handout to a small eraser or a little baggie with a couple of the pencil top erasers...we usually see an eraser of some kind everyday. Hopefully it will be a constant reminder to the girls that the Atonement is there for them and will wipe their slate clean. It was designed to be printed as a 4X6. If you need another size please let me know.
Have a great lesson.
Have you watched the video of the new 2014 Theme Song? If not, click here I have watched it 3 times and been brought to tears every time! The video and the lyrics of the song are so powerful! It brought such a strong Spirit to the room I knew I wanted to do something so that the YW could remember the video and remember the 2014 theme. The entire song is beautiful but it wouldn't fit on a 5X7 or 8X10. :) Instead I chose to use the chorus. I wanted to emphasize the lines in the song where it says He is calling YOUR name, He is waiting for YOU! I want the girls to feel how personal this invitation is for all of us!
I have made this image in a 5X7 and an 8X10. I thought this would be a wonderful Easter gift or a New Beginnings gift if you haven't already had your New Beginnings. You can print this image at Costco, WalMart or any other photo center. You can purchase inexpensive frames and frame them for your girls. If you are using this as an Easter gift it could be given at the end of your Easter lesson or I have seen some cute LDS Easter Egg Hunt ideas on Pinterest you could use for an activity. The final egg could tell the girls where to go to find their gift and you could have a framed picture for each girl. Just a couple ideas. :) If you need a size other than the 5X7 or 8X10 let me know. :)
February Lesson Help #4
This Power Point Covers:
Why should I treat my body like a temple?
Remembering that our bodies are temples for our Spirits, that they were paid for by the Savior's sacrifice and that they are on loan to us from our Heavenly Father really puts things into perspective! I love lessons like this where we can really drive home how special these girls are. No matter what they look like, where they come from or what their talents are they mean everything to our Heavenly Father!
I used 3 main resources for this lesson. 1) ELDER DAVID BEDNAR'S talk "Ye Are The Temple of Our God", I also used an article from the August 2011 Liahona called "My Body Is a Temple of God." Finally, I used some of Sister Tanner's talk "The Sanctity of the Body"
I did not use either video although both are great. I know my girls have seen 195 dresses and the video on Chastity was a little more for my Beehives than I felt they were ready for. Like I said, both are great videos if you choose to use them.
For a Handout I used one of the phrases from one of the Mormon Ads in the Power Point. I want the girls to know they don't need to "STRETCH" their standards. The world's view of beauty and the Lord's are two very different things! As far as what I would attach to the handout...anything stretchy! Taffy, a cute hair elastic, a scrunchy, a stretchy bracelet (cheap dollar ones of course :) I have attached 3 of the long versions to a PDF file or you can print a 4X6 at any photo center.
Have a great lesson.
February Lesson Help #3
This Power Point covers:
"Why Do We Have Adversity?"
Such a great topic! I enjoyed putting this lesson together. Again, I had SO much info to include it was very difficult to narrow it down. I used a New Era article from 2006 on Adversity in addition to the articles from the lds.org outline. I also found a Q&A from the New Era where Youth were answering the question "Why do we have trials?" I included those quotes above if you'd like to use them. I think I will keep them on hand and if we have time at the end of class I will hand a few out to the girls to read. I think they relate to their peers. I like to include these quotes when I can.
Slide 16 is where I plan to ask the girls to think of challenges and trials they think youth their age are faced with. If you want to just use your chalkboard that is great. I typed up a few just to give the basic idea. Then once the girls have listed trials, have them think about what they can learn from each trial.
Slide 19 makes reference to the story when Nephi breaks his bow and the difference between his reaction and the reaction of His brothers. I'm always short on time so I may end up just summarizing the story or having one of the girls summarize it and then discuss the differences.
The handout is a fun one. I loved the idea of letting adversity make us better NOT bitter. I thought you could pair it with anything lemon! Lemonheads, lemonade kool aid, the little single size powder packs that make lemonade,
lemon sqaures etc...you get the point. :)
Have a great lesson!
I thought I would start sharing a monthly Visiting Teaching handout. February's is about Jesus Christ being the Good Shepherd & how we should follow His example in caring for others.
Feel free to download and/or print the image for your Sisters. :)
**Please Note: Due to different versions of power point the slides may need to be adjusted after you download them. Please go through the power point before your lesson to make sure the pictures and the text are formatted correctly! I just opened a file I made using my laptop with my iPad and the font was different, colors were different and some of the pictures were in the wrong place. It may take a little tweeking! :)**
I'm a 36 year old Mom of 4 kiddos, 3 boys (12, 4 & 2 years old) and one little princess (9). I have an awesome hubby who puts up with my craziness...He supports me when I spend way too much time on my YW lessons. I started this blog for fun and have been so excited to watch it grow and watch others being able to use the Power Point lessons, handouts and other ideas I have posted. Thank you for stopping by!
