January Outline: The Godhead Lesson #4 This Power Point Covers: Who am I and Who can I become? In preparation for this lesson I came across an article in the January 2014 New Era entitled "Truth, Lies & your Self Worth" Immediately I thought of this lesson and how well it went along with it. I have included this article in the Power Point. The resources for this lesson were great. Most of us have heard the very popular talk by President Uchtdorf entitled "Your Happily Ever After." I love this article. I know it has been used quite a bit in Girls Camps and Night of Excellence, New Beginnings etc. I still wanted to incorporate it while changing it enough to keep girls interested who may have already heard the message. It's such a wonderful message its worth repeating! They also had 2 great videos listed as resources. I love them both and if you prefer another video by all means use it! I had a video in mind that I wanted to use. It is called "Be Strong, I know who I am" It was from 2010 but I love it and really felt like it tied in well with the lesson. It is only available online through the NEW ERA YouTube channel. I downloaded an MP4 version and will attach it above if you'd like to use it. The handout I had in mind was to print out the image above and attach it to a cute pen or pencil tying in the "Write" your own story. I want the girl to realize they all have a book with blank pages. Based on their choices they will "Write Their Own Story." We all want them to have a "Happily Ever After." I did want to point out to my YW that "Happily Ever After" doesn't mean life will be perfect and they will ride off into the sunset with prince charming. I hope that happens for them but this life is a challenge. In order to weather life's storms we must stay close to the Gospel. That is how we achieve the happy ending.
*If you are unable to open the Power Point because you have a different version of the program, let me know and I can send you a converted copy you will probably be able to use.*
January Outline: The Godhead Lesson #3 This Power Point Covers: What are the roles of the Holy Ghost? I loved preparing this lesson. I learned a lot! This lesson focuses on the roles and importance of the Holy Ghost. I think it touched on some points that were new to me and things I don't usually think about when I consider the Holy Ghost's impact on my life. The 3rd member of the Godhead is vital to our spiritual well being! This is the reason I chose the quote for the handout. It is by Elder Adrian Ochoa. I thought a cute handout would be to attach the image to a small plastic bag with little red candy hearts. Because valentines is right around the corner you can find chocolate hearts wrapped in red foil or red gummy hearts, etc. I have attached a JPEG as well as a PDF with 3 images to a page.
For slides 2-5 I copied the quotes and scripture references onto a separate page so that I can cut them out and hand them out to the girls before class starts. If their quote has a scripture reference I am going to ask them to look up the scripture and be prepared to read them to the class along with their quote. I have 16 girls so having them participate keeps them focused! If your group is smaller you can just have the girls take turns reading the slides as you move through the lesson.
Slide 8 is an object lesson/analogy that I got from Mormon Share . The video I chose is called "Increase Your Testimony." I LOVED this video! It made me teary and I think it will definitely bring the Spirit. That's our goal right! Slide 15 is a quote from LDS author Anthony Sweat.
Have a great lesson! Let me know if you have questions or problems downloading files. If you need the Poer point converted to an older version of Power Point let me know. I have had a couple people contact me with that issue and I can convert it and email it to you. :)
I used this object lesson from Mormon Share. It suggests using pictures of light that we see every day and likening it to the Savior. This is why I like Power points. Instead of printing out pictures I can simply download them into the PP. It saves time and lots of ink!
I also found an article called "I Believe in Christ" from the March 2008 New Era. I have uploaded a copy at the top of this post. It includes numerous short testimonies of Christ from LDS youth. I thought it might help the girls to hear from youth their age. Choose a few and let the girls read them out loud to the class.
The video "Reclaimed" is wonderful! I hope you all have time to show it during your lesson. I think it gives the girls a very practical look at the power of the atonement. None of us should try to dig up our "old garbage" that the Savior has reclaimed. If you haven't watched it, I highly recommend it.
The image for the handout is fairly simple. I don't want leaders to feel like they have to bake treats or go out and buy something for every lesson. If you can, great, go ahead and attach this image to something fun! The dollar store or party aisle of WalMart/Target has tons of "seek" items...small magnifying glasses, little binoculars, cheap little sunglasses etc. If you want to attach it to candy, great! If you just want to print them and hand them out, that works too!
The Godhead is one of those topics that I feel is SUPER important for the girls to understand. The Godhead is one of the reasons our Church is different from many Christian churches today. Understanding "Why" and being able to explain that to someone not of our faith is invaluable. In addition to the articles found in the lesson outline on lds.org I also used the following: Learning About The Godhead New Era January 2013 Rejoice in Our Knowledge of the Godhead Liahona Feb 2005
The second article is where I came up with the handout idea. I have attached a JPEG with just one of the titles or a PDF with 3 to a page. My plan is to print them on cardstock and attach a snack size "Almond Joy" to each one.
Why would we rejoice? What I hope these girls take away from this lesson is that our knowledge of the Godhead makes it easier to develop a relationship with each of the members of the Godhead. Knowing we are Daughters of a Heavenly Father who loves us and created us in his image is reason to rejoice! Knowing that the Savior is literally our older brother and our mediator with Heavenly Father can provide us with a sense of comfort, hope, and a reason to rejoice! Knowing that the Holy Ghost is our constant companion and will testify of truth to us, helping us to discern right from wrong, is reason to rejoice!
Our knowledge that these three beings are separate and accessible to us can provide an opportunity to grow closer to each member of the Godhead. Each relationship is individual and important and has a purpose on our road back to our Heavenly Father's presence.
Slide #14 gives a chance for the girls to "role play." The role play includes answering questions about the Godhead from friends who aren't of our faith. HEREare some questions and possible answers you can use. Depending on the size of your class you could split the girls into small groups or have individuals answer.
